How to Know If You’re on Track
Here’s a simple rule: take 5 full-length JEE Advanced mocks every month. Track your percentile and rank. If you’re scoring above 99.5 percentile consistently, you’re in the top 1,000. That’s your target zone.
Use this benchmark:
- Top 100: Aim for CS at IIT Bombay/Delhi
- Top 500: CS at IIT Madras/Kanpur, EE at IIT Bombay
- Top 1,000: CS at IIT Hyderabad/Roorkee, EE at IIT Delhi
- Top 2,000: Mechanical, Civil, or Chemical at top IITs
- Top 5,000: Any branch at newer IITs
Don’t just aim for a cutoff. Aim to beat the cutoff by 100 ranks. That buffer gives you breathing room if the paper is tougher or more students score high.
What About JEE Main? Do You Need a High Rank There Too?
JEE Main is just the entry ticket. You need to be in the top 2,50,000 to qualify for JEE Advanced. But once you’re in, JEE Main rank doesn’t matter. Only your JEE Advanced rank counts for IIT admission.

Did you lose marks in organic chemistry? Did you panic in the last hour? Fix those. Most students who crack IIT on their second attempt improve by 50+ ranks.
Others switch paths. Many top coders never went to IIT. They built apps, got internships, and joined startups. One student from a small town in Bihar got into Google after building a mobile app that hit 500,000 downloads. He never took JEE Advanced. He didn’t need to.

There are 4,000 seats across all IITs for undergrad engineering. There are over 1.5 million students who dream of getting in. That’s a 0.27% chance. It’s not impossible. But it’s not easy either.
